Instructor Biography: Arthur Braden has been teaching at Heald for over 16 years.  He has taught all of the

programming, web design (i.e. CIW Certified Internet Webmaster, and Cold Fusion), electronics (FCC

Radiotelephone Communications License and FCC Ship Radar Endorsement) and mathematics courses,

and taught courses in environmental science, psychology, english, MS Office Suite applications,

A+ certification and other computer-oriented courses.  Arthur is currently finishing an advanced

Computer Science degree at California State University, Sacramento.

Students develop touch control of the keyboard.  They build speed and accuracy through skill building exercises and keyboarding timings. Emphasis is placed on proper typing techniques.  Students practice keying primary business documents such as letters and memos.  3 Units

Gregg College Keyboarding & Document Processing, Lessons 1-20, 9th Edition, with Take Home CD, Ober et al, 2002, Glencoe McGraw-Hill

and

Skillbuilding: Building Speed and Accuracy on the Keyboard, 3rd Edition, Eide et al, 2003, Glencoe McGraw-Hill.

SPECIAL NOTE: In S101 students must keyboard at 35 words per minute (see paragraph below *) on two different 5-minute timed writings (timings), back to back continuously,  with no more than 3 errors or they receive an Incomplete (I) in the course no matter what grade they have.  Students who receive an Incomplete will be assigned to a P010 Workshop in the following quarter.  As soon as students meet the 35 words per minute goal in P010, they receive a grade for S101 Keyboarding.  If a student does not meet the required S101 keyboarding speed by the end of the quarter following S101, the student will be given an “F” in S101.  Students in this category must repeat S101 Keyboarding.   For this reason, we will begin practicing for this the week after you take your Mid Terms.

* Graduation requirements vary from major to major.  For most “business” programs the requirement is 40 wpm.  (You must determine this for your particular major.)

A challenge exam is available.  It may be taken before the start of the quarter or early in the first week of instruction. Please see the Director of Academic Affairs or your instructor for more information.

P.H.A.T. FRIDAYS

P.H.A.T. Fridays are designed to “Provide Helpful Assistance & Teaching” to all students.  While attendance is not taken, we encourage each student to take advantage of this special learning opportunity.

I will be available to provide each of you with learning opportunities by running workshops, study sessions, labs and tutoring sessions.  As a class, we can continue to decide on ways we can enhance your learning when we meet per the following times:

I will be available:

Monday and Wednesday:  5:00P - 6:00P in Room 213

Tuesday and Thursday: 5:30P – 6:00P in Room 213.

Friday: 4:30 – 5:30 in Room 213.

Homework

Homework will be posted online at: http://www.mindodyssey.com/ via the Course Syllabus link for

our class.  After getting to this web page click on the Weekly Assignment.  Assignments are always due

on Thursday at midnight, and if you need the extra time you can turn it in on Friday.  Late work of any kind

is assessed 20% per day, where weekends count as one day.  Homework is 50% of your overall grade.

Grades will be updated on Monday of each week to reflect the work you’ve submitted the previous Thursday.

If you don’t check your grades every week you may find that at the end of the quarter that any errors are

now a permanent feature of your grades, so let me know ASAP if you see an error!

P.H.A.T. Fridays

P.H.A.T. Fridays are designed to “Provide Helpful Assistance & Teaching” to all students.

This time will be available per the schedule below.   While attendance is not taken at these times,

we encourage each student to take advantage of this special learning opportunity. I will be

available to provide each of you with learning opportunities by running workshops, study sessions,

labs and tutoring sessions.  As a class, we can continue to decide on ways we can enhance your

learning when we meet at these times.

Nights:

Monday and Wednesday:  5:00P - 6:00P in Room 213

Tuesday and Thursday: 5:30P – 6:00P in Room 213.

Friday: 4:30 – 5:30 in Room 213.

Plagiarism and Cheating:

Students may wish to share information with others in the classroom. If an assignment looks in part to

be similar or exactly like that of another colleague then no action will be taken by the instructor.

However, similar to copyright law, if two or more assignments are submitted to the instructor that are

more than 75% alike then a single grade of (100-mistakes)/(students involved) will be split amongst them

for the first offense.  Thereafter such an occurrence will be assessed full credit (Grade 0).  Every quarter

your instructor must do this before students are willing to take it seriously.   Cheating on test’s and plagiarism

are your instructor’s pet peeves.  Take care of your education by learning the subject matter, and it will take care of you.

Grade Distribution

A grade of 90 percent or higher earns an A grade; 80 to 89 percent earns a B grade; 70 to 79 percent earns a C grade;

60 to 69 percent earns a D grade.

Our First 5-Minute Timings!

Lesson 15 and 16 this week.

This is the first time we officially take time out in the class and do 5-Minute Timings this week.  J   Remember that you need to do 2  of the 5-Minute Timings (chosen in class) at a minimum speed of 35 WPM with 3 errors or less accuracy by the end of this course.  I will be showing the class how to print out the timings in a larger font via visiting the Glencoe web site shown at the front of your GDP book, selecting Speed and Accuracy, double clicking the file you want, clicking the lower option button to open the file with a program of your choosing, and then selecting MS Word.  You then delete all of the text (for the first 3 pages) that is obviously not part of your timing, select all of the text in the document, and select a larger font from the font size pull-down selection list.

Notes: As you know, you can work on your homework at “home” by installing the GDP software (CD that came with your kit) per the instructions in the GDP book (it’s easy to install J).   Then you can do the work, select File à Portfolio à Ok and slide to the group of Lesson steps you would like to print.  Then hold down your Alt key and press PrtSc, which puts a copy of the screen in memory.  Then go into MS Word and click the Paste button to paste what is in memory onto the screen.  Now you can print it out to prove you did the homework.  J

Weeks 8 and 9

September

12 - 23

Unit 4 – Keyboarding: The Symbols

Lesson 17 will be due by September 23.

You must practice the 5-minute Timings for the files Business01, Business02, Business03, Business04, and Business06 that we downloaded from www.gdp.glencoe.com.

** Remember that requirements for passing this course are for you to complete 2 of the 5-Minute Timings with 3 errors or less for each,  by selecting Timings, then Open Timings, and then click on 5-minutes.

** For the timings to count you “must” let me know just before you would like to take the timings “for the record”.  I will then give you 2 “random” timings (you may not choose the ones you wish to do) for you to test with.

For Practice:

A) Click on Skillbuilding and select 1-Minute Timings

B) Notice that the second list shows 1-J., 2-G., 3-G., 4-H., and 5-G. to correspond to each of the 1-Minute Timings in your green Gregg College Keyboarding book for each of the lessons completed last week.  Each of these has a red “Goal”.  For instance, on page 4 for 1-J. you have a red “Goal: At least 10 wpm/1’/3e”.  This means that you must achieve 10 words per minute / in 1 minute / 3 (e)rrors maximum.

C) You should achieve the goal for each of these 1-Minute Timings you practiced last week.

Entry Timing, Page 2

If you were not here when we did so, download the example of a 5-minute timing used for passing this course from the textbook web site at www.gdp.glencoe.com

and select Interactive Activities, then Speed and Accuracy, then Business 01 file which will start the download of this file.  The file will then be stored in the c:\GDP9-Home\ctw subdirectory (or wherever you installed it at home) and then I will give you a copy of this file (if you can figure out at home how to create a working copy of the file by opening it up in Notepad and deleting the extra characters, you can use that) so that you can practice this Timing.  Then you will enter this Timing by selecting Timings, then Custom Timings, then click OK and your file will show up as a 5-Minute timing.

Week 10

September

26 - 30

Lesson 17 and practice the 5 Minute Timings! (Surprised? J )

Do Skillbuilding Exercises (pages 4, 6, 8, 10)

Week 11

October 3 – 5

Skillbuilding Exercises / Timing Practice

Final Timed Writings

All we do this week is practice 5-min. timings and you will have opportunities to pass one of them for the quarter early.  You need to have 35 wpm with 3 errors or less, and you can not take the 5-min. timing for the course until I know that you are doing this (the moment before your attempt I will give you the “okay” after looking to see that your attempt is legitimate).  With so many at better than 35 wpm, and considering that almost everyone does pass this, I am expecting many to finish with this early so that you don’t have to wrestle with it in the final week.

Last day to attempt Final Timings is the Friday of this week
